tips and notes
-
after cutting up the potatoes, be sure to wash them thoroughly with cold water or let them sit in cold water for a few minutes before draining them.
-
be sure to pat the potatoes completely dry until there is no water left behind before you start adding any seasoning. .
-
i did keep the skin on these potatoes for some added texture but that is completely up to you.
-
adjust any spices and seasonings to your taste. these potatoes are not spicy, so if you like spice, feel free to add some.
-
i would really recommend using a mix of cornstarch and rice flour as stated, as i’ve found that the potatoes don’t turn out as crispy when just using cornstarch.
-
make sure the potatoes are evenly coated in the seasonings and the dry ingredients. using your hands to mix everything in will make this easier.
-
grease the air fryer basket or spray it lightly with oil to ensure that the potatoes don’t stick to it.
-
i did not preheat the air fryer, so the cooking instructions are based on this. if you do preheat the air fryer, the potatoes might take less time to cook, so you’ll want to keep an eye on them.
-
when air frying the potatoes, arrange the potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket. it’s ok if there’s some overlap, but you want to make sure that you don’t overcrowd the basket. you’ll need to air fry the potatoes in batches.
-
shake the basket and toss the potatoes halfway through cooking times to ensure that all sides are cooked and crispy.
-
all air fryers vary, so you’ll want to keep an eye on your potatoes in the air fryer. you might need to adjust cooking times depending on your air fryer.
-
when making the cheese sauce, you need to make sure to keep the heat low to prevent graininess and to prevent the mixture from splitting. stir or whisk gradually as the sauce cooks over low heat.
-
i did just add cubes of cheddar to the cheese sauce, but for more even, smooth melting, and just to make things easier, i would recommend grating the cheddar before adding it to the pot.
-
you can adjust the consistency of the cheese sauce depending on your preference. if you find that the sauce is too thin, add more cheese. if you think it’s too thick, add warm milk gradually.
-
when making the cheese sauce, make sure the ingredients are at room temperature so that they’re not too cold, as this can cause the sauce to split.
-
make the sauce just before serving these crispy air fryer garlic potatoes and then serve immediately while it’s still hot.
-
if you find that your crispy air fried potato chunks have softened, you can reheat them in the air fryer for a few minutes to make them crispier.
